Plumbing for a refrigerator on a slab

Posted by dcwesley (My Page) on

We are getting ready to do a total kitchen remodel. Our house is a 50+ year old ranch on a slab. The refrigerator is not on a wall with plumbing; in fact it is on the opposite wall with aisle space between the sink wall and the refigerator wall.

I have been assuming we will continue without an ice maker, but thought I would check in here to see if I am missing a reasonable solution.

The only two things I can think of are

1)tearing up the slab to run piping (which worries me that it would be very expensive AND might run into the heating duct work)

2) running the pipes through the attic - which sounds like a freezing disaster waiting to happen.

Comments?

is there a header between the two opposite walls with aisle space between them?

If you were trying to get electricity to an area without tearing into a wall or say to run power to a ceiling fan where there is no wiring you would use a hollow metal tubing called "wiremold". This would accomodate the small plastic piping (close to the same size as wiring would be) required for an ice maker. Run the piping through the base cabinets from the sink to your aisle opening then in wiremold up and over to the refrigerator up close to your trim and it would hardly be noticed.

I ran my plumbing through the attic. I was careful to make sure the pipe was laid UNDER the insulation where it is warm, not over it.
