Shower valve replacement

I will be remodeling the wife's bathroom in a week and want to make sure I have all the right parts to hopefully cut down on daily trips to the store

The I am replacing the old shower unit with a new fiberglass unit. The old shower faucet is a single handle control, but not like the newer ones. The handle points straight down in the off position, then you have to pull it slightly away from the wall and to the left or right for water. It is not like the ones we have seen at the plumbing supply where you turn the handles clockwise/counterclockwise to control the temp.

Is it possible to just replace the insides so I do not have to do more plumbing work in the wall than necessary, or should I just get a new mixing valve and do all the soldering/joints required?

Here is the faucet and mixing valve I was thinking of going with if the old unit has to come out.

Here is the mixing valve

If you can get the parts, rebuilding the old valve should work at least as well as installing a new one.

You will need to rebuild the valve with the same manufacturers parts. Parts are not interchangeable from manufacturer to another. If you really like another brand faucet replace the roughin.

Thanks guys. I ended up getting the new valve, so I will have a little more plumbing work to do than I first anticipated.

It is a typical cross valve, supply on the sides, top for the shower head and bottom for tub, but I do not have a tub. What is the best way to seal this off? Each of the 4 ends of the valve are thread, so I assume just a pipe cap. Is teflon tape enough on the threads?
