Am finally finishing my downstairs bathroom. When doing the shower pan is it best to put down mud, wire, mud, chloralor and then more mud? Sorry if I just opened up a hornets nest.

Too much to explain here. It's detailed nicely on the john bridge tile forums.

No hornets, nest, just perhaps not the best place for your question. The tile pros hand out in the Bathroom forum, so your question will get attention from folks that know what they are talking about over there. Particularly, Mongo or billv are great.

I have built a couple of showers before and the easiest way is to use a shchluter shower system with sloped pan and kerdi water proofing. May cost a little more but is a much better method to the old rubber membrane and poured pan. http://www.schluter.com/index.aspx You should be able to tackle this rather easy after watching the dvd they send. The drain is also square which makes tiling much easier. If you ever watch Holmes thats all he uses pretty much. GL

+1 re schluter - great products even if your pan is bigger/different than the pans they have. I use kerdi and detra in all bathrooms I do.
