New water heater installed - cost reasonable?

I am looking to replace my 15 year old Bradford White water heater since I cannot get rid of rust staining issues in my showers (after having installed an entire chlorination system!). It appears to be related to the water heater.

I got a quote for a 75 gallon natural gas Bradford White Model # MI75S6BN, for $1450. Is this reasonable? I did also ask a plumber who did some work in my kitchen and their quote was slightly higher.

75 gallon is large for a water heater - do you have a large whirlpool tub?

It's all about labor. The time it takes to procure the heater, remove the old, install the new, and disposal.

I think $75 - $100/hr is reasonable.

Yes, there is a large tub, and 3 full bathrooms (tubs/showers).

I currently have a 75 gallon water heater, so wouldn't want to downsize.

I'm not sure what the hourly charge is - or how long it takes to install a water heater. You believe the quote is reasonable?

Rusty water could be coming from the pipes.

Do you have galvanized pipes?

I don't think so. Copper pipes.

The person who installed the chlorination system chlorinated the water heater (and pipes) about 5 times over the past several months, thinking there was still iron bacteria left in the water heater. But after the 5th time, he said it must just be the water heater.

Chlorine is a strong acid and will cause steel to rust.

Iron bacteria should be removed before it gets into your plumbing through chemical treatment and filtration. If it is already in the plumbing system then a good flushing and replacing the water heater will help.

Most electric companies have offers to replace gas with electric water heaters with free or low cost water heaters but you will have to pay to for the install.
