Anything you do with such a wide range of people in the house will be a bit of a compromise.

A 1.5 cubic ft softener will be overtaxed at times when you have 12 people in the house, particularly if you will use multiple bathrooms at a time with showers running, but if you go larger the softener would be oversized for lower house-population times.

Because you have to compromise on size, it is imperative that you purchase a softener with a good quality resin of American or German manufacture, such as Purolite.

You didn't mention whether or not you have chlorine-treated city water. If you do, 10% crosslinked resin is your best choice. If not, get 8% crosslinked resin. While Florida water is generally pretty good, if you do have city water, post a link to your city's water report so I can see if there are any other items in the water we need to be concerned about before you buy.

If you have well water, then it is important for you to obtain a water test from an independent, certified lab. You want to test: pH, TDS, hardness, bacteria, sulfur compounds (sulfates, sulfides), nitrates, anything else recommended. A local lab will know what to watch for in your area's water and will likely have a set of standard tests they run for well waters.
