damage from turning off the water?

I had a leaky toilet that I fixed myself and it seems to work fine. But when I travel, I've been turning off the water at the "main" which is inside my house just in case. I also had a problem last winter when it was so cold and turning the water off prevent a huge amount of damage when some of my pipes froze.

When I turn the water back on, I turn it on slowly and actually don't use a lot of water since I travel most of the time. But I can hear gurgling and popping as the water fills the pipes back up. I have a 3 story townhouse, if that matters. I also turn off the hot water heater from the breaker as well.

Could turning the water off and on (about once a month) do any damage? Thank you for any thoughts you have on this question.
