Looks like an old Erie timer based control valve. Maybe a model 541.
Timer based control valves have lost favor for the on demand technology which is more salt and water efficient

Is the softener working?
Is it regenerating? Every how many days?
Is there salt in the brine tank?

Is your water soft?

Are you on a well or municipal water system?

I just messed with it enough to figure out that it will regenerate, so I believe the timer is working.

There was no salt in the tank when we moved in, but I just added some today. After the regen cycle, the brine tank refilled.

I haven't checked if the water is actually soft, I don't have a kit. I'm assuming that it will take a couple of regen cycles to get it working correctly, I know this house was sitting empty for at least 8 months.

I just can't figure out how the timer works, I'm just looking for a model type so I can try to track a user manual down online.
