Replacing regular toilet with wall mount?

We are planning to redo our first floor powder room and our master bath. To conserve space and to enhance the appearance of the toilet, we are thinking about going with a Toto wall mounted unit. We are still in the planning phase and have not consulted with a contractor or plumber. The upstairs master bath seems to have the drain pipe going directly down inside an interior first floor 2 x 4 wall. If we do a wall mount, the pipe would have to have an elbow. What are the rules for that? How far can we go away from the the exisitng drain? We can/will add a bump out behind the toilet to give us the sapce we need for the tank unit and to bring the drain more in line with the existing one, but I don't think I want to bump out a full 12".
