Shower surround suggestions to go with planked walls

We are in the process of remodeling the bathroom of our late 1800's farmhouse. It appears that 2/3 of the bedroom closet was taken to make a bathroom. There is no other bathroom in the house at this time. It's very small. Trying to retain the farmhouse feel of the home and need to remodel the space which was last updated in the 1980's. I want to use planking horizontally on the walls for it's old house feel. I've chosen and purchased 1/4" finished plywood for the planks which will be painted in a mild taupe color. I come to a standstill when considering what to use as a tub/shower surround as the planks will surround the shower enclosure. I feel like tile may add another horizontal pattern that will overpower the space. I've considered using cement for the surround (DIY). What do any of you think of this idea or do you have any other suggestions? The floor will be a wood look (oak) vinyl plank of good quality.
