When to re-pipe??

I bought a house built in 1964 (1464 sq ft) six years ago. It still has galvanized pipes. When I bought it, my stepfather talked me out of re-piping the house at that time.

Currently, the water pressure is not great. A flushed toilet while someone is in the shower causes a drop in the water. Also, when the hot water is being drawn to the bathrooms, there is a knocking sound. Also, the water is very hard here. We live in CA and there are no freezes to burst pipes.

About once or twice a year, a plumber has to snake the kitchen or garage/washing machine sink.

I know it will cost about $6000 to re-pipe. Will re-piping get rid of the problems? Is it worth it if we're going to stay in the house for 5-10 years at most?

Thanks,
Rob
