If your softener is operating properly there should be no Super Iron Out in the softened water.

If you have iron in your untreated water a routine application of Super Iron Out (one cup may be more than you need) or a similar product is one way to do resin maintenance.

The directions on the product speak of layering it in with the salt... is that the routine application your referring to? What would be a better amount to use? Or a way to figure out what type of regime to adopt?

If the resin cleaning method you choose is Super Iron Out or a similar product I favor mixing an appropriate amount of product for the amount of iron in the raw water and resin volume of the softener in a gallon of water and pouring into the brine well and regenerating, as you did, once a month.

If you have a significant amount of iron and manganese in your raw water and your softener is correctly sized and set up you should be regenerating every three or four days.

When I do this manual regen with the product in the brine well, do I regenenrate a second time to completely flush it before using the water again or is it OK to use the water directly after a treatment?

As I posted before... if your softener is operating properly there should be no Super Iron Out in the softened water, but let me add that you might be using more product than necessary.
