Caulk around remodel plate in shower?

We had a plumber in today to replace valves in the shower; there was no built-in access so the plumber went in from the front and installed a remodel plate to cover the hole. I was not here while the work was done.

Now I'm looking at it and I don't see any caulk between the remodel plate and the tile. Should there be?

I will call the plumber in the morning to ask her, too, but would like to know what the best practice is. Google seems to suggest caulk at the top of the plate is the way to go. Any reason not to caulk?
