How do I remove a cleanout Gripper plug?

Our plumber installled a cleanout gripper plug when he put new hardware in our tub. We have a clogged drain and a plumber out of town and need to remove it to clean it out. We can not figure out how to remove it. We unscrewed it, but it would only come out about 1/4 inch, do we completely remove the nut? Or pull harder! Thank you

After loosening the wingnut, bump the stem of the bolt inwards to make sure it is also loose. Then you may have to wiggle the plug out by pulling it from one side and then the other.
