How to confirm: septic or sewer?

Our street is a row of old houses (approximately 100 yrs, give or take a few), mostly downgrade from the road, with a creek running though the back yards. My understanding has been that all the houses across the street empty to sewers; all on this side use septic tanks. It is confirmed that five of the six on this side definitely have septic tanks. I recently purchased the sixth which is being charged a sewer bill. I know little to nothing of the house's history, was never even able to speak with previous owners.

I've been unable to find any septic clean-out lids, signs of grey water area, leech bed, etc. With the creek present, there may be no leech bed, per se. Also, it is a fairly large property, much of which is covered with dense foliage, ivy, etc.

I'm not comfortable merely taking someone's word for it (especially someone with a vested interest), nor do I want to later learn that an unknown septic system has been neglected for years ..perhaps decades.

How can I determine with certainty whether this house uses a septic or sewer?
