You don't need fine mesh and the percentage of cross link of the resin won't matter as there is no chlorine as there would be in city water.

There's more to correctly sizing a softener than the few details of the water conditions and usage you posted. Need more details from water test... hardness, iron, manganese, pH, TDS, bacteria, nitrates for starters and the units of measure such as gpg, ppm, ppb, etc. Also # of bathrooms and SFR.

I'd opt for a Fleck 7000SXT or Clack WS1 control valve as the design limit of the 5600 series is up to a 12" diameter resin tank and your 64k softener choice (which is questionable) is right at that 12" tank limit.

I'd look into a twin resin tank softener. Slightly more efficient than a single resin tank unit, makes brine with treated water, AND regenerates with treated water. When you have iron it makes more sense to regenerate the resin with treated water which promotes longer resin service life. Do you wash dirty clothes with dirty water?

Either choice you'll need to institute a routine application of Iron Out or a similar product.
