The tapered metal fittings seal without any additional material.

The threads holding the joins together are NOT tapered pipe thread, but straight machine threads.

And remember: when you are done, turn on the gas and test the joint with a spray bottle of soapy water.

So flex to appliance and other side flex to shutoff valve no dope or tape needed. Brick, when you say 'generally' 'though...?
