Water Heater Plumbed Backwards

Nephew's new-to-him 15 year old house had the water heater plumbed backwards, I corrected this and everything seems OK. After leaving the thought occurred to me that in the old configuration water would have been exiting the dip tube at the bottom of the tank and air would have been trapped above the bottom of the dip tube. Why didn't the electric heating elements burn out? Is there some kind of weep hole in the top of the dip tube? Thanks.
