Gas water heater won't stay lit after running out of propane

I wondered why we didn't have as much hot water as usual (had never run low before), so I checked the tank--a State brand, I think it is-- and its error code was 6....that it had reached its max. number of retries for the hour. Then I checked the propane tank, and it read 0%.

Got the tank filled that night, but told the guy he didn't need to come in to check anything (we're all sick right now and didn't want to be bothered) since it seemed we still had some gas because the rangetop worked.

Now the tank still won't get hot because it won't stay burning long enough to get it so.

Is this just coincidence that it happened the same time as running out of propane? Maybe we have air in the line somehow? I'm boiling water on the range now to try and get the gas flowing well through the lines.

Trying to save some money and ask here before calling a plumber. Hubby gonna kill me for not letting the propane guy come inside to check things out, but we'd already gotten in bed (we have the flu). Ugh.

Thanks for any ideas, help!
Tracey
