Removing Shower Head - Odd Fixture - See pictures

Hi, I'm trying to replace my shower head that is likely the original in our 1979 home. I removed the actual head, but there is this ball fixture now connected to the pipe. I have tried using a wrench to screw it off but it will not budge, any ideas?
