Culligan Water Softener Problem

I have an eight year old Culligan Medalist Series softener. Twice in the past two or three weeks the Brine Draw/Slow Rinse cylcle was running for several hours with an E1 error code appearing on the microprocessor display. Any thoughts on the nature of the problem?
