how does one remove Kohler stems in tub/shower

I would like to repair an older Kohler tub/shower that is dripping. I have removed the handles (plastic tulip-shaped, by the way), unscrewed the escutcheon/valve extension combo, and now am looking at the yoke with stems. I cannot figure out how the stems are retained in the yoke. Any ideas how to remove them? Thank you.

To answer my own question, I can pull them out, as they were retained by the stem extensions. The lesson here is not to remove the handles unless the water is shut off. (I didn't do that and was lucky.)
