What plumbing goes on BEHIND the tile wall in a shower?

| THe previous owners of my new "old" home renovated the bathroom, installing one of those Delta jetted body spray showers...the kind that hand jetted sprays incorporated in the temperature control and on/off plate. I hate it (it's PLASTIC!) and want to replace it and the accompanying hand-held shower with a simple shower head and hand-held. But the typical plumbing behind the tile wall is a mystery to me; I know only that there seem to be arcane fittings with names like "diverter" and different sized pipes and things.
So...question is...how hard (translate...how expensive) is it likely to be to have a plumber replace this nasty plastic stuff? (I'm talking about cost in addition to cost of buying the new fixtures, that is). And what do I need to know about sizes or related arcane info before buying a good Rohl, Grohe or other shower head, control thing-a-mob-bob and hand held shower to replace what's there now?

| If the plastic stuff is the main issue, you can just order a better/fancier Delta trim kit in better or different color materials. But if you want to replace everything (diverter, etc.), you may have extra holes/gaps to cover up, esp. if there's no access from behind the wall, so that means tilework cost on top of the plumbing labor. So let's say a plumber charges 250 or so for labor, you've still got the tile guy to deal with. You may avoid the tile repair with an oversize remodel plate (Moen has one), but you'd probably hate the oversize look. |

| What is on the other side of the wall? Opening up drywall (or even plaster) and repairing is a lot cheaper than tile. |

| The next time we have shower repairs done, I will make sure that we have an access panel for the plumbing. In our case, the shower controls are accessible from an outside wall. Last time, we had the shower head and faucets replaced from behind and the siding repaired. Would have been smarter to put in an access panel. Live and learn. |
