Temp setting on new Marathon Water Heater

We just had a new Marathon water heater installed and I love it.
But when the plumber installed it he said that there was a problem with the water coming into the house. He turned the water off at the main and once he had the heater installed he turned the main back on. He told me that he hadn't turned the cold water on coming into the heater yet, but there was water flowing in into it from somewhere. That there was something diverting water from under the house straight into the heater. I think at one time there was a water softener under the the house and I thought that we had it removed. He said that might be it. My question is will this cause any problems until we can get someone to go under the house and check it out? The temp is supposed to be set at 120, but when I used a thermometer it read 140. I can't get anyone here for a least another week.
