Using a Wing Nut Test Plug to replace a clean out cap

Hi,

I have a cast iron sewer stack going into my basement floor and into the sewer line. Right above the floor is a Y joint with cap on one side that right now is not screwed in and is just sitting on top of the pipe. The cap and the threads of the pipe are rusted and it cannot be screwed in. Is it acceptable or safe to use a wing nut plug to close the opening? I am just wondering will it hold against a sewer backup? Thanks for your time.

If nothing ever goes wrong, it should be adequate. However, if there should ever be a backup in the sewer line, which can happen during utility work or heavy sustained downpours, you could have a real mess on your hands (and floor).
I would attack those threads with wire brushes. A rotary wire brush in a drill will make the task go faster.
