Iron stain in the toilet tank - is it a problem?

We have a 3 yr old house and well system. Water is fairly hard with significant soluble iron (I have the numbers upstairs, but they're not accessible right now). We've had a softener system since about month 2 after moving in which works well enough - I don't see iron/hard water stains in toilet bowls/sinks although I do think I'm seeing a slow "dingy-ing" of white laundry over time.

Recently, I opened the back of one of the toilets and noticed the whole inside is orange (powdery, not slimy). Iron, I assume since I know the softener is not going to be 100%. Do I need to worry about it? Will it cause a problem with the toilet function?

My husband recently bought some "Rust Out" from the water softener guy to do a treatment on the water softener. It says on the package that you can use it to clean the toilet tank, but I hesitate because I have read things that say these kind of chemicals will damage the toilet parts. Any advice?

Thanks.
