Well Pressure Tank......need a backflow preventer?

Installing a new pressure tank in my dads house. The instructions include adding a back flow preventer (one way valve). However my current system in my home doesnt have one. Neither does my brothers house. All similar systems. Is this valve neccessary?

It stops the water from draining back to the well, I guess. I'd think it was a good idea, but I don't have that much experience with wells, which I assume you're on.

If the system worked until the tank failed, the requisite check valve or foot valve is already in place. Jet pumps will not work without the foot valve and submersible pumps have a check valve built-in.

My check valve at pump failed so pressure tank would push water back down well. I put a 2nd valve at tank inlet and solved problem.
