That is a "Dresser" coupling. It may buy you a day or a year. Obviously the remainder of that pipe is deteriorated and at best, another place is destined to fail soon. That particular coupling does very little to restrain the pipe ends from moving apart and if the pipe is free to move, one of the pipes will soon pop out of the coupling.
So this did not buy you much time.

The problem with using PVC repair fittings on metal pipe is that the sizes are not the same. The outside diameter of the pipe may not be the same and so the fitting may not fit as tightly as it should.

Just order yourself a repair coupling for the galvanized pipe and change them out. How long all the rest of your plumbing will last is impossible to say without seeing it all. But that repair, if a good repair coupling is used, and if it is strapped down if it moves a lot, should last years.

I'm very nervous right now with the time bomb dresser coupling ahead my kitchen. I have another question. I plan to change the pipe the whole house in a couple of months. I will do stop-gap solution by changing the PVC dresser coupling to a steel coupling per your advice. My other question is, what type should I change to when it's time to change for the entire house, there are a bunch of them out there.

1) PEX
2) CPVC
3) PPVC
4) Copper

Please give suggestion what and why. Our home is over 40 years old, 2 adults and 2 dogs living in 1800 sqft home. Thanks.

I'm not a plumber... don't play one on TV... and didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night...

It seems that every twenty years or so there's a new fantastic plastic plumbing solution introduced and approved and then 10 to 20 years later the failures start and then are followed by class action law suits.

Copper costs but it's well established how long it lasts and how to maintain it and does not require any special tools. As long as your water is not aggressive copper is hard to beat.

After checking with many plumbers, we can't afford copper, way too expensive. We are left with 2 choices. PEX A (Uponor) or PEX B (Watts).

Does anyone has any experience with these two type of piping. I need to hear from you. Thanks.
