Should I change to an oil hot water heater?

Hi -

I live in CT in a house built in 1950. I have a 100 gallon (yes, I said 100 gallon) Ford brand electric water heater in the basement and our electric bills are very high ($300 - $400 a month). We have been told by everyone that we need to get a new hot water heater, but when we look into it, the choices become overwhelming.

We use oil heat for a forced hot air furnace (installed around 1990). Natural gas is just recently available on the street, but we haven't hooked into it yet and don't have the budget to switch to a new furnace right now. The gas company has told us that we'll have to pay for the line to our house unless we switch to a new gas furnace.

So, what do we do about the hot water heater?

We received an estimate for $3100 for a newly installed 32 gallon oil-fired water heater. It was higher than I expected and I really can't tell what my cost savings will be on this one.

Our electricity rates are really high in CT - thanks deregulation!!

So, what would you do?
