Water pipe noise

I am looking for some advice on reducing water pipe noise in my house. When water is running through our house it sounds like a jet engine sometimes (for example when the irrigation system is running). I live in a 50-year old house, unfinished basement, wood floors, so there is not much to deaden the sound.

Would using pipe straps help, rather than the existing wire hangers?

I'm also open to using some form of sound insulation, within reason. We would like to finish the rest of the basement at some point.

Any other ideas?
