Water Pipe Size

Bought this Vacation home 7 hours away. Last time there the 35 yr old water heater died. I will just replace. My PLAN is to use braided hose with the SharkBite connection. I took some measurements last time I was there. Planned to buy my supplies tomorrow before I drive down. Here is my problem. Measurements coming out the drywall are 5/8 O.D. & 7/8 O.D. (measured with calipers)..
I was expecting 3/4 & 1/2 . So looks like I can not eliminate all the solder joints & elbows..Unfortunately- I did NOT measure the pipes coming straight up from the water heater but they appear to be the same in diameter. I hope they are 3/4 then I can cut the vertical pipes & use the Sharkbite hoses.(not good at sweating copper). So I guess the only real question I have is HOW do I determine from looking at the photo attached which is supply & which will be the hot water output. Are water heaters from 1978 marked somehow ? Thanks for the advice.
*Ignore bad wiring- I will fix all that.
