Mystery compressor and pressure tank

I am looking to buy an old house here in Eastern Massachusetts. I am told it is hooked up to a town water supply rather than having a well.
In looking around the basement, I noticed a compressor and steel pressure tank connected to a water line; the other end of the water line exits the foundation. I didn't manage to trace the other water lines in the little bit of time I had.
I've never seen anything like this before. Anyone know what it is for? Should I be worried?
