Taken at the Petrified Forest in Northern Arizona.

People who farmed the Puerco River Valley 650 to 2000 years ago, pecked these petroglyphs onto the rocks, leaving a legacy etched in stone...

I'm a printer by trade and all most all printing inks are soy based even color inks. I personally think glossy paper is fine to use, it's all the same ink. It's metallic inks and special inks like laser safe or inks for printing on vinyl label stock that I would worry about. But we're not mulching our gardens with anything printed with those inks as long as your using news print. I've done it and it works great for weed control. I usually put straw on top and it keeps it from blowing away. But now it just use the straw and skip the newspaper. You can till it all under when done.

Pros: Readily available and it breaks down via natural processes. Cons: Little or no nutrient value and potential for toxic substances on the paper. Fine to use and ideal for some applications (like a temporary weed barrier along with cardboard), but no reason to seek it out in mass quantities. The potential for toxic elements on the paper (or in the cardboard) is not usually significant enough to warrant concern.

I think that lifting weed fabric that's underneath rooted plants could either be a great thing, or be disastrous. If the roost grow into the fabric (as they often do), you'd be ripping root systems apart as you lift the fabric. If roots don't penetrate, the fabric will hinder root growth and plant growth in turn. ;The fabric will also prevent some amount of GOOD critter action among the roots too, although this might not be that big of an issue for you. Also, if you have "wildflowers" that like to send down fast and deep taproots, this barrier will not be good. Nor will you have great luck transplanting them. :P I use a lot of cardboard, newspaper, and even paper grocery shopping bags as a method of creating new beds primarily. Thinner paper material is good in areas where it's more dry and the breakdown of organic material happens slower (like on hot dry sunny slopes and in a new rock garden, for example). I use cardboard where stuff happens faster, and in my yard cardboard is about the right thickness and has the right "stuff" to quell weeds while breaking down fast enough to allow the plants on top to establish happily. A good recipe for a fast and beautiful bed without a lot of work or worry: - a space that's about 10x10 feet in size or so - about 100 paper grocery bags - about a cubic yard of good compost -a roll of black landscape plastic or a bunch of black garbage bags - one order of a great seed mix This time of year, you mark your space, put down paper bags on the ground, wet them with a hose, then layer over about 6 inches of compost. Wet really well, then lay black plastic or plastic garbage bags over the top and let it sit over the winter. Then in the spring, pull back the plastic, seed it, and keep it watered. For all the years I worked offshore (oil field), I was gone sometimes 6 months. While I was home, I piled up my leaves and such in the spots I wanted to create a bed. By the time I returned home, soil that had been hard as a rock was diggable and ready to be worked. It was the little composting worms that I gave credit to digging the bed for me. I worked in the decomposed leaves and grass clippings with further bags of purchased Black Cow and had no problems with plants growing. In my zone 8B area, the problem was not rocks in the soil, but rather tree roots. Any problems with digging holes usually was caused by root intrusion. As a result, I chose lots of plants that could survive amongst the roots. Two of these are leriope and aspedistra. It has puzzled me a lot why neither of these plants are spoken of as companions to hosta. Do they compete? Or are they not tolerant of the colder climate range where hosta thrive? I love heuchera and heucherela, but zone 8b is the lower extreme of their tolerance. I guess this is too off-topic for this thread, so I will look up a companion planting thread and post there.

Thank You both! Utah also has a 'Newspaper Rock' but I haven't been to that one yet.

No, no initials:) They do not let people close to the rock above, probably for that reason. Anyway, the rock was below the viewing site and about 40 yards from where I took the photo, so I had to zoom-in to get the photo.

There is something similar in New Mexico. This is at a very remote location. It's not protected at all. In fact I'm guessing only a handful of people even know that it exists. I just stumbled across it out hiking years ago.

Excellent, Ron! Would that happen to be in the Gila Wilderness Area, by any chance? I took some photos of some when we were there a few years ago, some were off the beaten path.

Have you ever been to Three Rivers Petroglyph Site? There are over 20,000 documented petroglyphs there, they cover the entire hill and surrounding area. I took hundreds of photos.

It is the largest collection site of petroglyphs in the entire world. They have a fenced in area, but you can go outside of that area, but not everyone knows that, but that is where you find the most pristene glyphs.

I lived in Silver City, the gateway to the Gila, for 16 years. No, these petroglyphs are'nt in the Gila but, they're near there. Where is Three Rivers? There are also lots of petroglyphs near the Cooke's Range in SW New Mexico.

Three Rivers is between Corrizozo in the north, and White Sands, to the south, on HWY 54.

We travel south on I-25 out of Albuquerque. Turn east(left) at San Antonio(Home of the first Hilton hotel). At Corrizozo, turn right, and go south. It is just a small stop in the road. There is a small gift shop off HWY 54, but you turn right past that and drive another 2 miles.

Plan on spending some time there as it will take hours, and even days if you want to see most of it. Like I mentioned, go outside the fenced area for some of the best and undisturbed glyphs.

There are also many in Chaco Canyon, along with the ruins of the Anasazi. Also, at El Morro(and the Ice Cave), south of Grants, there are more ruins with glyphs there along with early Spanish carvings in the rock face, some as early as the 1500's.

That is so cool that you can go out hiking and just stumble across something like that without any fences or anything! It's hard to find areas like that anymore! Great pictures!
