Night shots- thank you for the tips...

It worked to hold my breath. I didn't realize the movement at night made such a difference...of course I was dizzy by the time I finished LOL ! I also now realize that the ones that turn out best do not have the flood lights in them...I think that messes up the clarity too. I will try again tonight as it is the last night til next year. Here are the results:

nice job considering the elements. Hand held - hard stuff to have still hands.

The shutter speed on some of you pics have a 1/8" speed. that is why are still having some camera shake issues. Unless you have really still hands, in the low light you still have some camera shake evident at 1/80". That is why a tripod is almost a "must". Do have an oversized bean bag to set the camera on? I made one it comes in handy quite a bit.

Also you might be doing everything right as far have still hands and holding you breathe but the camera shake could still be present because of the residual force from pressing the shutter button. Sometimes, when I have to do hand held. I put on the 2 sec timer. That way the picture is taken after the shutter button has been pressed and released.
That might help.

On camera flash is good for 10-15 feet so I would suggest turning that off.

Thank you...I need to read the book. I have no idea how to make some of these adjustments . I have relied to much on p&s. I will try again with your suggestions. I don't have anything at present to use as a support but I will look around. thank you again, c

Which one do you have? The soft flat leafed one or the 3 sided stiff one? I grow the soft leafed one very easily. Care of it is..get a cutting,let it dry for a few days,plant it an inch or so in GOOD cactus soil,as small a pot as possible, it will root fast,and it will bloom faster once it is rootbound. Give it lots of direct light in the morning or afternoon, feed it some bloom booster food once a month and in the first few months, it could bloom. IF you have the stiff one, I know it needs more sun, but it is basically the same care. I grow mine every year from new young cuttings and get blooms every summer..it loves heat and being potbound.

agirlsgirl, Glad to see you so excited about growing bananas. I got hooked on them about 4 years ago and keep dividing my clumps. I now have 3 good sized clumps and they get close to 14 feet. I'm in a little warmer zone than yours, but the basjoo's that I grow are really cold hardy so you shouldn't worry much about them. I cut them down to about a foot tall and cover them with leaves. Come spring, they are poking up through the leaves. This year I grew one of the pups in a pot and have it in the garage now. It stands about 3 feet tall and all the leaves are cut off. I don't water it any more and plan to place it in the ground come summer. Thought I'd share a photo of my last standing clump that I'm sure will be mush tomorrow as lows tonight are predicted to be in the 20's. Happy growing. From Garden 2009

Low light shots without a flash are always better if you use a tripod. I think the most common reason for blurred photos is camera shake. If you don't have a tripod available, try steadying your hands on something like a railing, car hood, mail box, anything solid that won't wobble--and hold your breath;) Set camera to 'night snapshot' mode. Set the ISO to 400 and try a few snaps. (It seems 400 is the highest setting on your camera.) Good luck.

Thanks, Kim. Good job noticing the unfettered lap lane, which is something I really wanted. The property is an acre, most of which is backyard. So the pool is just one small part. I don't want to say that landscaping the rest of the yard is turning out to be a big project, but Dick Cheney called and wanted to know if Halliburton could bid on it!

Nice photos, and a nice job of decorating! I always have a hard time with those type shots, but you did great.

Looks like a palm, or maybe a short banana, in the sixth photo? I guess you don't live where the Winters are really cold. Once again, nice photos.
