Upgrading My Camera

I am torn between Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ18 and the Canon S3 or S5 IS.

Any good advice? I use am no expert, just love good nature shots and of course family pictures.

Please don't get real technical with your response; I won't understand it anyway.

Boy, you do have a dilemma. Stevesdigicams.com list the Panasonic and the S5 as two of the best super zooms there are.
And also a Sony H9 and H7! I think they both have even more zoom than the Canon. I think you'll probably be happy with whichever one you get. Read their ratings on:

Wow, the Lumix has x18 optical zoom. Amazing. If I were you, I'd also read the user forums on those 2 sites above, and see what the people who have those cams actually think of them!

Hey Seth It was a while ago now, but I believe that I set it up to snap a frame every 10 or 20 seconds apart, and the longest one ran for only about 7 hours, which was plenty of time to catch the hyacinth blooming. I was using a Sony digital 8 camcorder hooked up to a laptop through a USB video capture device and the laptop was running Media Studio Pro video capture program. I got a few pictures of the set up here. What I have been wanting to do is get a camera and compatible software that allows me to capture higher resolution pictures so I could make high definition videos. I do have a HD camcorder, but the capture software I was using does not work with firewire inputs which is the only way to import HD video.

Thank you for all your lovely comments on my small garden - it warms my heart that you like it too. I posted the Pics in 2 threads so they would load faster. The weather is very warm here (90F) ... and I really enjoy the early mornings and the afternoons different places in my garden. I truly take time to smell the roses and enjoy my garden this year. The fragrances of all the roses is outstanding and all I had dreamt roses could offer ... and is healing. (True Ingrid - I have had some adversity in life) - but it has made me more sensitive and stronger - and I live well. Many times I have wished that I lived in warmer climate - and I always imagined that - California - would be close to heaven for roses - but I realize now the PROS of growing roses here (good clayish soil, good rainfall and it is very few days in a year that the temps are above 90F and the sun so strong that the roses FRY. And roses do not grow very big here (Frost and less sun intensity limits their size - it means I can grow many more roses - even if I have just smaller areas to garden - In California I would have to choose ... So my illusion of how easy it is to grow roses in California is gone ... It is hard to find anything as lush green and beautiful as here - on these wonderful summer days - where I regain my strength and get a new sense of purpose and direction - now that my garden has peaked. Also do not have as many garden design jobs lately - but some hard maintaince jobs. And creative writing is a skill I am working on. At least I make half sense in my native language ...LOL. I am so blessed to be able to grow all these roses and grow most of them well - each of them are so interesting and so different and the colours of OGRs do not clash - I have however tried to plant more dark "Red" Austins and HPs even modern shrub roses like Burgundy Ice and they slowly blend in well among the Old Garden Roses - in a year or 2 they will make more of an impact. I all ways have one of my 3 roses benches ready for friends dropping by and they are owerwhelmed by my garden too - one friend said today - but it is almost too much! I said NO - - just wait until next year - I take out some roses and plant some more perennials (later and long -flowering Hardy geraniums) and Dark Leaved Perennials and some smaller ornamental grasses. He shook his head ... And the whole neighbourhood is smitten by my roses and are working on arches and want advice to create the same effects - and I will help them - because I will be able to enjoy these roses too - in a few years. Just saw the weather forecast - we are in for so very warm summerdays - I will take picures of roses in mine and others gardens the next days. This might truly be the best season ever ... next year it might rain and the roses turn into ugly brown mush ... like we heard it did for some forum members Celeste (last year) and Thorngrower. But we all try to make the best of what we have and hope for the best weather when our garden peaks. May all of you enjoy the summer and this season too ...

Andrew, the things we do for these plants, right?! Haha!Thank goodness there's a place like this forum for us sickos!!! Do you tell your partner like I do, "You think I'M bad?! There are plenty of others on the forum that have WAY MORE than me - you're lucky, really..." I don't think he believes it...hell, I don't think anyone believes it but it seems like the right thing to say. I can't believe your DSP is blooming, CONGRATS!!! I'm, getting to the point where I need some kind of dolly or something, there's no reason to suffer through lugging these pots if I can find something that'll work. Before I shell out the big bucks on the tree dolly K got, I did some research & found this one: Most regular dollies just won't work, the toe plate is too short. This one however, says the unfolded depth is 32", so the toe plate must be substantially larger than average. The reviews I could find say that also. The toe plate on the one K got from Northern Tool says the toe plate is 21", I think this one should be almost as long. It's rated for 250 lbs. although Bosch says you could go 275. It's fully collapsible for storage or transport but the reviews are great, saying it's sturdy. It's called the Bosch L Cart and it's made to hold these tool box things but of course many people are using it as a regular dolly. It was $99 + tax / free shipping. If you make the pic of a grey card - at the same location you are going to take your photo, and use this information to create a post photo filter to correct a photo taken at the same location at the same light - you can significantly improve the color presentation. Some cameras have this option built in, or you can use post processing available in Lightroom etc. The grey card - or a combination of grey, white and black cards is sold in any specialized camera stores. Not expensive. And plenty of youtube videos on how-to. Regarding what soft to use - the best soft is the one you know really well. Photoshop = while you can produce a super result - is huge... probably way too involved for most of us. Since most of us already got attached to our IPhones and Androids - these gizmos have really good cameras built in - and you can select - inside-outside- fluorescent - tungsten, try them all - and choose the one - that works for this location the best - and go with it.

Thanks. I have read every review I could Google! But haven't read the user's reviews. Guess I missed that.

One review on some photography site thought the S3 took a better picture that the S5. It gets very confusing.

From personal experience, I know Sony and Canon cameras are usually excellent. I'm sure lots of people love the Panosonic, too! Another thing you could do, if there are camera stores or if you have a big WalMart or Best Buy near you, is look at those models, hold them, see which you like. You probably can't really go wrong with any of them.

I have the S3 and love it! I love the super zoom and the image stabilization.

It has been a rugged camera for me and gets heavy use. Easy to use on the auto settings, but fun to play with on the other settings also.

I like the continous shooting in Sports Mode.

It also takes fantastic video. I didn't buy the camera for this, but I never get my regular video camera out anymore -ever!

The S5 has the hot shoe for an external flash - that would be nice.

I saw Target has the S5 for $399 this week.

I order all my cameras from NewEgg though.

I have found the user reviews at Steves and other forums very helpful.

Also, the Canon forums are helpful to me now. I have improved my photography by reading them.

Our closest Wal-Mart doesn't carry much, no Panasonics. The only photography store doesn't carry them either. I haven't tried BestBuy. Most serious shops are about 45 minutes from us which means about a 4-hr trip once you check out many stores...........and I hate shopping.

I wonder about the 18x Zoom as compared to the 12X on the Canons. I have never had extended zoom so can't get my mind around the difference it would make.

Of course anything will be such a step up from my little A60 Canon, which I love.

Then that has led to research on batteries, smart chargers, etc......and it goes on.

In my humble opinion, you won't be unhappy with either one. I have the Panasonic fz20 (older version of the one you are looking at) and it is a very well made camera with an excellent Leica lens and good stabilization. It used to be hard to find tele convertor lenses for Panasonic but not anymore. You can find as many add on lenses, filters, etc as you can for Canon. I've used the Canon S3 and S5 and liked both very much. If I were looking for a Canon, I would choose the S3 because the S5 isn't really that much better.

It comes down to the 18x 28-504mm vs 12x 36-432mm lens and the price. Both have 8mp, basically equal sensors, good stabilization, and similar everything else. Something you can do is go to pbase, put each camera into their search feature and see lots of photos taken with these cameras.

Oh, and if you are interested in nature photography check out the bird forum here on gardenweb. There are some excellent photographers there to give their advise and you can search back and look at some of their bird photos. Something as small as a bird with almost constant movement gives you a good basis for how a camera handles.

Just some thoughts on research.

beancounter, thanks very much, I think it was someone named Bob that talked so favorably about the Panasonic and Vann's some time back. He was on the Bird forum I believe.

I also takes lots of shots of my flower beds and garden and the farm, so want a very good macro feature and good color representation.

I am taking my time, because this will be it for me in
digital cameras for a long time!

I do enjoy the macro and super macro settings on my S3. I didn't think I would use it that much - but I do!
