Try growing some native Mouse Melon in with your Passion Vine. Female Longwings are the only butterflies able to digest pollen and they prefer Cucurbits. Another favorite of female Longwings are male Papaya trees. Try planting a Cassia tree somewhere sunny and you'll get Cloudless Sulfurs and Sleepy Oranges. Plant Aristolochia and you'll attract Polydamas and/or Pipevine Swallowtails. Wild Lime will attract Giant Swallowtails. Fennel and Dill attract Black Swallowtails. Breynia and Oleander will bring in diurnal moths. If you're near the coast, plant Coontie and there's a chance you could see an Atala. Try planting Bacopa or Lippia for the White Peacock. And for nectar... Pentas, Porterweed, Cestrum Diurnum, Jatropha, Tithonia, Russelia, Clerodendron and Lantana.

Clear eggs are usually duds, eggs that, for whatever reason, were infertile and didn't hatch. Zebra longwing eggs are yellow, according to my books. I've never seen ZLW eggs, so I don't know if they look like gulf frit eggs or not, probably do. ZLW cats look like gulf frit cats in the early instars, then become white, whereas gulf frits stay orange. Congratulations! Sherry

From the book Florida Butterfly Gardening by Minno & Minno - "....The zebra longwing is unusual in several aspects of adult behavior, such as pupal mating. One or more males often find and perch on or near the pupa of a female that is ready to emerge. Apparently, a pheromone attracts the males. As the female begins to emerge, the males attempt to thrust their abdomens into the pupal case. One male (usually the largest) will succeed and couple with the female. Then they mate as the female expands and dries her wings." I've always thought it bizarre that female zebras can't even dry off and pump up their wings before being mated!
