Copying a picture - 1970s style snapshot

I have been asked to supply some pictures for a 60th birthday party, and will send copies of pix I took in high school (1970-71) with a standard Instamatic camera. I copied a few at a local drugstore kiosk, and even tho the pictures came out as a 4x6, much of the content of the old square picture was cut off. Any suggestions for getting the entire picture onto the new size?

I routinely copy 5x5 square prints on my Kodak 7250 Printer scanner and I am sure you can use the same technique on the kiosks.

Rather than write out a long drawn out and confusing explanation, I made an illustration that should explain it.
