the best picture edit software

Hi all, I am new to this forum but not to photography. I have had at least 10 different digital cameras and each one came with it's own software. I used to use a program that I really liked, it had an option to add borders and frames as well as simple cropping and color/contrast options. It is off my hard drive now and I can't find the cd either. What is a good simple software that will do the above and not cost a fortune. I take a lot of animal and garden pix.

I have Gimp but find it really hard to work with and besides no borders.

The cameras I use most now are my Fugi 7 digital, Kodak ES 4 digital and Nikon coolpix 3500. Thanks in advance all! /Abi

Free download Frame Fun. Very basic frames, easy to use software.

The Gimp is probably the best editing software you will find for free. It can do about as much as the earlier versions of Photoshop Elements. The secret is, ALWAYS work with a COPY of your photo, never the original. And be fearless and try everything.

If Gimp just doesn't appeal to you, how about Picasa? Free, basic editing and organizing. It will import from camara, resize photos, sharpen the colors, lighten/darken, change to B&W/sepia, etc. It's also a pretty good organizer, uses thumbnails to help you find your pictures.

Infranview and Serif Photo Plus are both free and easy to use. Both do a pretty good job of editing but aren't real great for organizing. Google to find downloads. I have Photoshop and still use Serif because it does contrast and resizing better than PS.

Those are my best recommendations.

I use Irfanview more than anything, especially to size wallpaper. I found the instructions lacking for some things like cropping. I still have Roxio and will continue with it for "fixing" photos until it is no longer supported. Then I will go with Irfanview for everything. I don't do a lot of pictures anymore, there is no one who shows an interest in them besides me. I don't even take a camera with me on trips anymore.

The problem on graphic loaded threads is avatars, over-sized pictures, fancy signatures, cartoons, etc. can cause difficulty, delay, and pure frustration for DUN members, low end "high-speed" members and those with unreliable/varying speeds. Not all members have reliable middle to high end dsl or cable. So for as long as I can remember members as a courtesy whenever possible have reduced pictures and refrained from loading up posts with graphics. When a member cancels viewing a thread because the thread takes too long to load or doesn't load all members lose. DA

Thanks, sheeisback. Yes, I'll be the one doing the editing. DD has her hands full, as does DSIL, tending to babies. DD called a professional photographer today, so the heat is off trying to get good newborn pictures for the announcements. I have a little breathing room to look at various editing programs. I've begun to understand the concept of layers. I played with Pixlr Editor for a while yesterday. There aren't a lot of tutorials online for Pixlr. Some of the best I found were for grammar school children (hmmm...I think that says it all). Haven't tried Gimp yet.

I use Cyberlink Photodirector (10 I believe.) I was able to try a and keep a free version years ago and later bought a newer version. It has all the basic features plus advances ones like Photoshop. You can layer and it supports raw files. My favorite thing is the people beautification tools and the background object removal. The people feature a brush for the whites if the eyes and dark brush for lashes. You can adjust the intensity and size of the brushes. I also like the skin smoother feature. Again, adjustable so can still look natural and not plastic. The object removal is one I use often for everything to background adjustments to a face blemish. There’s also a feature that allows you to select/mask an area and you can adjust the contrast etc. I use this in faces or other areas normally to brighten a little. It does has preset filters but I don’t use them. You can also create your own presets. I had Cyberlink then but not every photo I take needs all the extra adjustments. It was great for basic quick, full control if the brightness, contrast, shadows, highlights, etc. adjustments. Then they went and made changes and dumbed it way down! You had limited control but oh they added filters! Eye roll. A bunch of horrific filters.

If you have MicroSoft Office installed, you may already have a simple photo editor that will keep you going until you find something to your liking. To find, click on 'start", move to "Microsoft Office Tools" and a choice for the photo editor may appear in the submenu. I have Office 2000. The photo editor may be hidden in a different location in later versions of Office, or no longer included. Use the 'find' or 'search' command to look for files names containing "photo" or "edit".

Irfanview is pretty much my basic, plus its compatible with alot of free plugins...Picaso's good...Recently Serif's PhotoPlus 6 and you can use plugins that you have in Irfanview...or whatever else is compatible and on your other programs...and Framefun like Bean has said...it is easy and fun...

I like and use ACDsee Pro most often, but use Photoshop Elements and CS periodically.
