archiving old portraits

Hi,

I searched the forum but didn't find any info on preserving old portraits. I have a bunch of 5x7, 8x10 and 11x14 portraits from the 1920s through '60s that are all mounted or inserted into a cardboard type frame or folder. Does anyone know the best way to remove them or if it's best to leave them in the frames/folders? Some of the folders are falling apart. I'm guessing the frames/folders aren't acid-free so I thought it would be best to remove the photos but I'm trying to find out for sure.

I think I would try to find some other forums that might have people who are knowledgeable about this. Or go to a photo shop or even a scrap booking place. Good luck!

Here is the little bit of knowledge I have about storing photos.

Use non-acid paper available in scrap book stores, photo stores, and hobby stores. Never use plastic that contains PVC. Oddly, I've heard sandwich bags are ok. However, its best to use acid free paper which does not collect moisture like plastic can. And do keep in a low moisture area that is not subject to very high or very low temperatures.

For precious photos, put an archival quality paper between each photo. Store in acid free cardboard boxes.

Be sure and write the names of the photographed people on the backs of each photo.

Google storing or protecting photos for a lot more info. Supplies probably available on line.

It's not the current year so much as the number of pages. You'll notice the page numbers go to 67 on this forum. Different # of pages for different forums. Any more posts knock off the oldest archived page. You'll also notice a post sometimes started years ago. That's because someone posted to it later on, which brought it back up front. I think I was off on part of my complaint. In figuring out the archived cottage garden messages, I forgot to account for the three different sections of the forum: Discussion, Conversations, and Gallery. When I add those in, I get about the same total as other forums I see here. I apologize for the mistake. The main issue still stands, though. iVillage gives us a paltry amount of storage space for old messages. If each text message takes up 100K of storage space, which I think is way over-generous, 2000 messages times about 250 forums adds up to 50 Meg of storage space. You could put that into a small corner of the hard drive on your oldest computer and never know it was there. I'm sure iVillage could afford to give us 100 times that much space without even buying a new hard drive. C'mon iVillage, what do you say? ThinMan

You can go back to the forum page and at the bottom there is a "search box". Put "compumom" in the box and click "entire site". This will bring up all the topics you've posted to. I don't know how to filter it any further. When I clicked this forum I didn't get any response except this thread. I hope this helps. Nancy
