Hi Scamp, Without actually looking at one of the leaves it is impossible to guess correctly what you actually have going on. I agree with Ian, best to take a sample in somewhere to a tree expert. Juniper and Cedars are host to rust deseases so it wouldn't surprise me if it is indeed a type of rust desease since there are so many Junipers/Cedars growing in Ontario. The easiest way to tell if there is a host close by would be after a warm spring rain. The host will present these bright orange horn ike growths usually on the tips of branches. You can see pictures of them by googling the images for cedar rust. No known cure that I've heard of. :-( Cindi

I lost a newly planted Mountain Ash one particularly wet year and the nurseryman said yes, too wet -they prefer a light, very well drained soil (rocky, or on a slope). Once they are well established, I'm not sure if that's so much an issue unless perhaps it is planted in a consistently wet/compacted spot.

OK, double posting here, but I have discovered what kind of bug I have!! I don't know if it has a more common name..it looks like it is a type of Junebug/May beetle. It's full name is Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae Dichelonyx. If you are interested, I found a link that goes into a little more detail about them. Apparently they "can" do a fair bit of damage if the numbers are high enough, but it doesn't sound like there is a whole lot that I can do. They feed on all sorts of stuff. I guess I'll just have to hope they don't seriously injure anything, and that after their life cycle is over they leave me alone. Here is a link that might be useful: My shiny bug

Any hosta with yellow or green foliage would look great. Any of the Sum and Substance family (example - Mountain Snow, Winter Snow, Sum it Up, Sum Cup O Joe, Sum of all) or ones that have fragrant flowers will do just fine in sun. Something like Fragrant Bouquet apparently needs sun for its fragrance. Honeybells is another one that comes to mind. Also Sunpower, Titanic, Fat Cat, Liberty, Majesty, montana Aureomarginata, Leading Lady, Xanadu, Green Piecrust, Stardust, Jimmy Crack Corn, Golden Sunburst, Brother Stephan, and Blaze of Glory are other large to extra large hostas that I grow here that might work. Sugar and Cream I saw growing in a lot of sun when I was in Minneapolis last weekend. I have some hostas in a lot of sun mixed with daylilies, irises, peonies, etc etc. Hostas and daylilies will want more water than bearded irises. But, the beardless irises, like the siberian, don't mind extra water. Brenda
