Help with Photography.

Hi, I've been shooting photographs with 35mm cameras for just about 30 years now.

I'm not working now since my heart attack, so I have time to help anyone who is interested in improving their photography.

All my work is with film, but the same concepts apply regardless of medium.

We're not worthy, we're not worthy. That's a very nice waterfall photo.

I'd have to replace my camera first, then help would be appreciated.

Reproducing colors exactly from a plant to a digital camera and then to print is very difficult for many reasons. The time of day, the season that the photo is taken (spring vs summer vs fall) the light is reflected and absorbed in the garden and then backlit on the computer and reproduced in print and then interpreted by the eye. Lots of places it is changed although very slightly. Also the calibration of your monitor also affects the final color. It can appear perfect on your computer and still be off to the printers computer. Matching to paint samples will help as will your photo editor. If you are using a PC, I would suggest using Zoner editing software. It is much easier to use than Photoshop and is the most popular editor in Europe - but does not work on Macs. Like Photoshop, there is are temperature and vivid sliders to help get it correct but it takes time. Also taking the photos in shade - not full sun - will help the purples and blues. They are very difficult to render correctly! It is a matter of how the reds are recorded on digital media. To add to the confusion, the color that I call purple, may be magenta to the next person. I am a professional photographer, and painted for years and found that most color names are just approximations of the mix of primaries, red, green and yellow. Some good advise!...I never use tripod, I like to be free in movement, ...to the question about turning off IS when on tripod,.. as soon you're screwing the camera on the tripod, the screw going into the camera base switches off IS...this what I still remember reading manual long time ago, I think?? Your pictures are pretty good for a start with using 250mm lens. To make your bird look larger you really have to fill frame in your camera, so either get 400mm or 800 lens, or get closer to your subject. I use a 200mm lens with converter, still very handy and flexible,...I would hate to use a big gun like 400 or 800mm, have tried the 400mm but took it back, about 2 weeks ago have tried the new Professional body with video, think it was 5 D Mark 2, 21 megapixels,....I didn't like it, but now I'm trying to get closer to subject with camouflage / blind. Taking food photos professionally is not easy. It requires expensive equipment, lots of time, years of training, a good size studio, and lots of cold food. IMHO, for the purpose of showing everyday cooking and to share as many your work as possible with others in this forum, it will require a different strategy. Not that I am the expert, I have found the following works for me well. 1. One high wattage daylight CFL (Amazon.com) which I put on top of my dinning room cabinet aiming at the white ceiling. 2. One large kitchen microwave container on the CFL bulb to diffuse the light. 3. One tripod. 4. One normal digital camera (Coolpix 8400). That's all. Nothing more. After a dish is made and I dump everything on a plate as quickly as I can, I just put it on the dinning table, turn on the light, snap a side view, and use the tripod to snap a top view. What you see is what you get. The whole process takes not too many seconds. Tips? Just one, don't use you flash. If you don't have bright enough light, use the tripod and the camera's self timer. dcarch

Yes, it will cost a small fortune, but worth having the professional photo years from now. I still treasure DD's communion picture. The church had a photographer that shot for everyone, but I took her to a professional photographer whose work I admired. He usually shoots with very light or white backgrounds. I told him straight away that the white-light photos were not what I was looking for. I wanted more of an old fashioned-type photograph, think old time library, victorian style. He shot her with a brown-taupey backdrop, sitting in a Queen Anne style chair. Stunning. Actually put her portrait in the brochures for communions as he was so well known for doing the lighter settings. He wanted to show that he could do something a bit different. So, let the photographer know what your expectations of the photo are. You are spending alot of money, so you want the photos to have a certain style or look. With the digital age, professional photographers shoot digitally. I've never heard of a photographer who will sell you negatives even back in the day of film. The photographer will arrange an appointment for you to view the digital pics or "proofs". It is a PIA and tough to make decisions on pics that way, but unless you are hiring someone to do a wedding or something on that scale, that's how the photographers in my area do it. You may be able to find someone who still shoots film? But I don't think they will sell you the negatives. That's the way they make their money - by selling prints of their negatives. We just returned from a beach vacation. Our house is at the end of the island where there are alot of jettys (sp?) and big rock formations just beyond the dunes. Every night there were oodles of families on the beach taking pics at sunset. It was fun to watch, they were all dressed in khaki and white or denim and white. DH commented that alot had their own equipment as opposed to hiring the "beach photographers" advertising in the shore community. Much cheaper, but surely not the same result. I don't know where you are located, but you may want to ask a friend or someone whose had a beach photo professionally done for a referral.

Thanks for the nice comments on the waterfall. That would be one of my best photographs. I've shot thousands of others that aren't nearly as pretty.

Thus, all are worthy. Also, I personally think equipment is overrated.

A good photograph is all about good composition. My wife struggles with the controls on the camera. She doesn't understand them, so she will ask me to set them for her.

This can be frustrating for me, as she consistently brings home the best photograph from our vacations without actually knowing how to use the camera.

"A little Humble Pie a la mode, perhaps?"

Compostition comes natural to her, whereas I have to think the process through.

Gorgeous waterfall scene! I haven't checked out your whole site yet but I see you've been/lived in New Castle? We live about half an hour from there, right across OH/PA border...I'm always looking to improve photography...Watch out you maybe sorry for offering your insight, LOL...Anyway, Thanks for your offer...Welcome...Hope to see more of your posts here!

would you please set my camera for me too?

i haven't been to this photo forum in a lonnnng time, decided to rejoin just today, and then i see this incredibly generous offer...could use all the advice i can get

i've a nikon d70, and upgrade from the tank (sony cd1000)

i can never remember the who.what.where.when of shutter & aperture...also, i don't get shutter or aperture...i've considered tattooing the info on my arm, see if that helps

neither do i understand what iso has to do with it all

so i just take billions of pics while playin' with manual, AP, SP (and whatever the P stands for, i use that one too) and hope i get at least one that's in focus and not over or under exposed

btw, i LOVE jen's barn, winter farm & jen's boats and especially the b/w's
