The pics are getting bigger and bigger.......

I've noticed--not just here, but on other forums as well--that the images people are posting seem to be getting larger all the time. It used to be we were cautioned against posting anything over a certain size. (I think it was 640 x 480.) I guess that rule doesn't apply anymore.

All of this is not a problem for me, as I have a high-speed broadband connection. But I wonder if some other members might be having trouble loading these uber-images, to the point where they give up trying to look.

This is a relatively quiet forum, but I thought I'd mention it here as the subject is Photography, after all.

Any thoughts?

I have posted bigger pics, but more compressed. It does suck when a person is on dial-up, everything is so slow to open.

I agree, I remember how frustrating dial up could be.

I went with Photobucket's 640 X 480 and felt a little guilty. Let me know if they should be smaller from now on and I'll be happy to comply.

I Read somewhere pretty recently (It may have been on this forum) that Gordon Graham's 7lb. 12oz. Tomato was grown on a gigantic vine, That it reached over 50 feet in length/height. So would this mean that the bigger a plant is, the larger the tomatoes in can support? If so, I'm gonna be growing some Huge plants next season. =) ***** I don't think any length for Graham's plant has ever been mentioned b'c the plant was on the ground and it was very weedy there and he only accidentally found the fruit that was reported. The size of a fruit is determined by the genetics of the variety so I don't think I'd say that a larger plant grows larger fruits. You can have a huge plant that has cherry tomatoes on it and they're going to give you cherry tomatoes. You can disbud and remove fruits from a variety that has the genetic capacity to grow large ones and the remaining few fruits will be larger and this is something that those growing for contests might do. But in general plant size is not correlated with fruit size. There is a new book out by Dr. Marvin Meissner on how to grow large fruits and you might consider buying that if it's your wish to grow super size tomatoes for contests. Carolyn

I can understand that making a difference in what you might want...But does someone leave daily and can grab the trash and take it out on the way? Or use it as an exercise opportunity? (running up and down our stairs is nearly the extent of my 'fitness routine' and I welcome it as such) I don't know how old any kids in your household might be, but mine seem to always have energy to burn (even if they don't always realize it or want to use it) and could do 4 floors in no time. I'm not trying to be flip, or discount your concern, but I'd still value the larger sink over the 2 more gallons of room in the trash.

We went for bigger pantry. Still awaiting painting and floors, so no pics yet and I'm only imagining how wonderful it will be. Our kitchen is not big ... 10x15-ish, maybe. But we like the layout, and it's really open to the other parts of the house. As part of the reno, I wanted to lose some upper cabinets, so we did two things: convert the laundry room to a large pantry, and add bookshelves with doors for storage to the ends of the large island. Just across from the kitchen was our laundry room, 10x10-ish. We built out a new laundry/sewing room and converted the previous laundry room to a big ol' pantry. Key to making this work, I think, was opening up the doorway (no door, just a 5' entryway), so it's easily accessible and looks more kitchen-y. Stain, paint, flooring and countertops match the kitchen, so it looks like extended kitchen space, even though it's a few feet away. At least, that's the plan. There's a full-length (10') closet space on one side wall, ready for elfa shelving and drawers inside. The official "pantry." We initially planned to put cabinets along that wall, but decided instead to close it in with two sets of double doors ... easy to access, but I can close the doors on it. We're long-time elfa owners and swear by the stuff, plus it was less expensive than cabinets and more flexible. The other side of the room has a spare fridge and freezer and a 4' cabinet with sink. Sort of pantry / prep / storage space in one room. The other thing I'm really excited about is having lots of light in there ... I hate a dark, cramped pantry! Hope there's at least one useful thought or idea in there. Wish I could post photos now, but very soon!

Hehe, got a tidbit from someone looking over my shoulder while I was in this thread. She's a bit of a clothes horse.. She suggested a full closet gallery. Cut the bedroom down to 12x16 (you only sleep there anyway if all your closet is elsewhere), leaving the south wall open for a 4x16 shoes and shiney/jewlery section. Run the bathroom and closet long like I originally suggested with the even 8x18 division, closet also on the south end. Run the south end with lots of windows (frosted of course) for natural light with benches/storage under the windows for folded clothes, breaks/divisions between windows tall boys of storage for smalls like socks, ties, scarves, unmentionables, ect. The full run of the 18 feet along the bathroom wall being for hanging storage. With breaks for a couple dress dummies. All with bottom to top shades on the windows, with additional lighting worked in too. She wasn't sure how to work the bathroom.. I had to remind her it needed at least access from the bedroom to count as a master bath, lol. But I thought it an interesting off the wall addition to suggest here. I thought my own suggestion of two longs instead of two blocks a shake up. I do like the two blocks as is as well.

Pam, 640 x 480 is pretty standard. Otherwise, they're too small to see. Since this is a photo forum, we want people to be able to see our photos!

Most of what I have on photobucket is 640X480.

Hmmmm....I have a question then. Just because I reduce the photos to 640 X 480 when uploading to Photobucket, it sounds like that might not necessarily mean that it reduces the size of the file? Or does it?

It should reduce it. But when I use IrfanView to resize my pics, the KB's are way more than when I resize in Paint Shop Pro and use higher compression. So there are two aspects to reducing the pics.
I prefer to have them be 800 x 600 or so, and compressed more. They pop open fairly quickly and the upload is way faster.

Thank you, Joan. I'm new to Irfanview and use it off and on...I like that you can resize/convert a whole batch of pictures. So much to learn.

I do that all the time. Batch operation. Just make sure you put it in a NEW folder and as a double safety, make sure "overwrite files" is NOT checked!

Hey Joan, off subject, remember when we traded e-mails a couple of times years ago about photography? I just got one of those things on Facebook suggesting you as a friend. If Facebook can dig up such obscure contacts, imagine what the Feds can do to check out our associates?!

I guess I'm gonna hafta quit going to those Al Quida training conferences on line.
