Beach, low angled light

Morning:

We were at Myrtle Beach on vacation last month and early one morning I shot these from our 8th floor balcony. The sun was low and subjects were back lit. I shot in color but changed to B&W. Treated like I was printing on high contrast film.

This was interesting

But I like this one better.

I should have stuck with the beach walkers longer than I did but got distracted by the reflections off the waves:

By the way. Kept the last wave in color and played with the contrast and shadow.

I like the second one better, too. I wish I could see it a little smaller; it more than fills my 22" monitor, and I'd a bit of a different perspective on it.

Interesting that the fisherman in pic #1 has his own personal wave rolling in front of him.

Very cool metallic look on the last wave pic.

Hello folks, I think EO's work has value from the standpoint of basic knowledge and practical application. As a professional researcher who has studied his experiments, I have learned a lot about the effects of water, air, shade and sun on plants. Things that many of us thought were a "given" such as hosta crowns will rot when subjected to moisture continuously, have turned out to be untrue. I have seen firsthand that taking a plant from low light to high ligh causes at least the loss of one/half to an entire season's growth of leaves, and at least some loss of root growth while the plant concentrates on flushing with new leaves to gather light and make food. Additionally, I've been using Butch's "constant water reservoir" system for all my incoming new hostas in order to build up the root mass before planting in the permanent spots. I've found that the plants put down lots of roots to reach the water reservoir and this in turn allows them to gather more nutrients to put out new leaves. I just purchased my current favorite plant H.'Golden Meadows" and plan to take it through this process prior to planting in my garden, it was more than I usually pay for a hosta and I want to give it the best start possible. I'm taking some of Butch's experiments to the next level, providing a control group and limiting the variables so the studies will be more controlled and the data more reliable. Coastal hue suggestions for low-light dining room?

We have a coastal house too. We have a beautiful view of the bay in the living room and kitchen. Our dining room is on the other side of the house--facing east. It gets some light. But not the same as the rest of the house. With a color consultant's blessing, I have chosen BM Classic Gray for the walls and BM Summer Shower for the ceiling. We haven't actually painted it yet. But that's where we're headed. Good luck!

Flushmount light on an angled ceiling?

Hey wi-sailorgirl.... whatever you decide, I recommend you err on the side of too much lighting! I am sad about how the lighting on our modern master bath turned out. The room is about 6'3" x 13'3" or something like that. Here's what I used for lighting: 1) Restoration Hardware 12" Turner Flushmount over the tub (2x 60w) 2) REstoration Hardware 9" Turner Flushmount over the toilet zone (2x 40w) 3) Fan-only (Panasonic Whisper something or other) in middle of room 4) Recessed shower light (Progress Lighting) over shower 5) 2x Restoration Hardware Albion Sconces, one on either side of 5-foot vanity, 60w each. OK, so that's a lot of $$$ spent on lighting, and dimmers, and everything, but it is NOT ENOUGH LIGHT. All of the RH fixtures have frosted glass shades, so the amount of light coming from them is very low. I really can't see well enough to put makeup on at the vanity (which is a rare occasion for me, but, still!!!). It's a bummer! Anyway, back to your dilemma about the slanted ceiling. Our LR has a similar slope, and I thought a flushmount would look too weird. There, I used small mini-spots, sort of like track light heads but without the track. If I could have used recessed, I would have, but for heat loss reasons there I could not. They do make recessed for sloped ceilings. If it won't make the room look too busy, maybe sconces are the way to go, but I urge you to try to look at them in person first if you can, to see how much light really comes out of the shades! Or a combination of recessed and sconces. I don't think the recessed would be too harsh at all if combined with some side lighting. Or, as was suggested above, how about a semi-flushmount. I've seen some nice modern ones that are like a flat drum shade that hangs down about 6" below the ceiling mount. Good luck, whatever you do. I can't wait to see pics! Stacey

I do like the pulley too..maybe I can convince him to exchange the non working one. #4 I am afraid is on the small side but I have to go back and find the dimensions on it. just looks small to me. but i do like the nautical look it has. re. the table lighting. after spending the weekend there with ceiling fans in the adjacent room, I am really sorry we didn't just wire for a ceiling fan over the table. we wired for 2 drum/pendant type lights. I asked my husband if would want to change that out and he is not crazy abou the idea. the breeze in the family room is really nice, but the kitchen is still. still working on him. Otherwise i do like the woven or drum pendants. I was never crazy about a ceiling fan over a table but..here it would be very functional.

Love the lighting-super like the angled view of the 1st pic with the people doing their thing, seemingly obvlivous to each other, would prefer a little wider but that would be a personal preference-2nd one like he's taking timeout to enjoy the waves and view. The waves are lovely, I can hear them rolling to and fro. The b&w works well. A nice view from the balcony!!! And like Bigack-would love to go the beach, too!!!

Thanks for your comments. I also like #'s 2 and 4 the best. Number 2 is my absolute favorite of any that I took in that session. It is cropped from a much larger photo which you can see more of in shot #1 which is also cropped from the original. 10.1 MP gives you some room to play with when cropping.

By the way, the camera is a Cannon EOS Rebel XS with a 75 to 300 MM lens.

Susan, here is the beach sitter photo reduced in size but I'm afraid its quality isn't as good as the original crop.

Here is the original shot - reduced in size but it gives you an idea of where the cropping was done. I have variations in one form or another that have all figures represented but the Beach Sitter was by far the best.

While the b&w worked on pics 1 and 2 I think now that the waves probably present better in color. I'm going to go back and play with some of them again.

Thanks, but it's still huge. :-)

I clicked on the first posting, and it sent me to your Photobucket account, where I viewed the shot in a small size. Normally, I'd say too small, but it gave me the perspective I was looking for. I had no idea you did so much cropping of that scene. Good eye!!

Early morning or late day sun . . . there's nothing like it for great pictures.

Joan, Thanks. I was very happy with the photos I took that morning. I expect that to try to duplicate the conditions I'd have to stay in the same condo.
