Newbie Needs Help

I'm trying to upgrade my camera. Have a Canon A40 (2mp) that I'm guessing is probably about 9-10 years old. I'm guessing the higher mps now should produce better quality. Bought a Canon SX100 about 6 months ago and it did not have as good quality (color and clarity) when printed as the A40 so I returned it. Recently bought a Kodak Z981 (14mp) with the same results so am taking it back. Both of these cameras were recommended as top performers by Consumer Reports. I took identical pictures with the two new cameras and the A40 for comparison. Printer and photo paper were the same. I tried adjusting the settings but it did not help. This just does not make sense to me. Both cameras I bought were in the $300 range at the time so I expected better results than from the A40. Can someone give me a simple explanation or give me suggestions for a better performer? I think I would basically like a good point and shoot and don't want to spend more than $300.

While I am not personally a Canon fan, I have had opportunity to shoot both a Canon SX100 and a Kodak Z981.

From my experience both of those cameras are capable of producing images that rival the quality of high end DSLR's.

I must agree with Konrad, if you could post some photos we might be able to help you out, but I doubt very seriously if the fault is in the cameras and I don't think you will resolve your problems by exchanging them for another camera.

We are about to make the plunge to purchase a 6 acres property. About 4 acres are cleared. The house is in the middle, 1/2 acres on one side and 3+ acres on the other. We are going to fence in the 1/2 acre for our dog and as a flower garden and farm the 3 acres. At my current 1/2 acre house, we have a large veggie garden, chicken coop and a few fruit trees. We know that 3 acres will be a completely different ball game. Can someone help us with ideas how to use this land? We think we would stay with just chickens, maybe more chickens, but no other livestock as we would like to go on week long vacations. what kind of crops should we grow? And how can we sell the harvest to receive income. Do we need to buy heavy equipment to work the land? Should we build raised beds? How do hobby framers irrigate their land? (We use soaker hoses right now on the raised beds.) thanks in advance for your advice.

I think it depends on where you are building. There was a recent thread on here from a gal with zero construction experience who built a beautiful house in 4 months. On the other hand, my husband and I have extensive construction experience and every tool known to mankind and it took us 8 months to get to where we could move in, but we still aren't done. There is a building boom in our town and we had a tough time getting subs. We ended up doing about 50% of the build ourselves. And, even with all of our know-how, mistakes were made. One other thing, we have been on the job site every day since we broke ground. Will you be able to be on site each day? If you want to do research, I would try to familiarize yourself with what goes into building a home and the order things are built. Also, find out what each sub is responsible for in your area. An example is sometimes the plumbers install the gas lines, sometimes the HVAC guys. Be ready for thousands of decisions too. Best of luck on your build.

Yes, the leaves on #3 are fuzzy. The leaves look too thin to be Echeveria pulvinata. Echeveria harmsii is another possibility.

Lazypup, I suspect you are absolutely correct about exchanging the cameras. Know it's probably operator error but don't know what to do about it. Both new cameras appeared fairly straight forward in their operation so I don't get it. Will try to post again later.

Thanks, Lazypup, for your kind offer to post my pics but I already returned the camera. Will let it rest for a while. I see the great photography here and on the other GW forums and, from time to time, let my allegator ambition override my hummingbird ability. Just one more thing to learn but, so many crafts/hobbies and only one lifetime. Sometimes think the hurrier I go the behinder I get. :
