Which angle do you like best; red yellow, blue or violet?

They are all very nice angles. I like photo 1 and 3 the best. Looking at your photos, I can't see how you get to the bench.

1 - beautiful colorful close-up of a garden bench.

2 - lovely picture of a garden featuring a bench and beautiful irises.

3 - lovely picture of a garden with a bench and gorgeous flowerbeds showing the house the garden belongs to.

4 - this one doesn't work for me, it somehow doesn't have balance though I can't explain why.

Josh, I do have some Japanese Painted Ferns but what is shown is varagated Packasandra. Started with a few plants that take off from stem cuttings in the early spring. Now I have hundreds used as a border. Behind them Hosta Gold Standard and various common ones. Under a seedling Japanese maple tree. There is some mix-mash of wild ferns from our woods. Also a few jack'n the pulpit just for fun. Wait, in the first picture is a Japanese painted fern. You are right my friend.

One of the things I teach is photography, and these are great examples. The biggest difference I see is better lighting; the original pix are a bit overexposed. With proper exposure, the colors appear more rich and the room looks significantly more appealing. The angle definitely matters. I think most people, when they set out to photograph the room, are influenced by the furniture; that is, they take a picture of the table, when they should really squat down and get a long wide shot of the flooring to show just how big the room is. And, yes, we cannot discount the importance of simply cleaning up. Pack up half the kids' toys and your rarely used kitchen items, put your winter clothes into storage -- consider it getting ahead on your packing. This is one reason magazine pix appeal to us so much: So much space! So much room in which we can live! If we stop to think about it, we might note that the room has no trash can, etc., but we don't -- we just take in "the feel" of the place. Hmmm, perhaps this is a retirement job for me. Taking pix of houses ready for sale.

There are inherent limitations in a soil that takes 2 weeks to dry down to the point the grower feels it's safe to water again. We have to allow too, that since you haven't been monitoring moisture levels, the plant might be capable of going much longer between waterings, which would tend to increase the level of limitations associated with too much water in the soil. Given the size of the plant and the size of the container, the only way that can occur is by virtue of the fact the soil holds a lot of excess water. The soils I use require watering every 1-4 days, depending on the pot size and weather or indoor conditions. Keep in mind that most of my plantings are bonsai, so the ratio of plant mass to soil volume is very different than growing in a container as large as yours. I do have many dozens of plants growing on for bonsai in containers the size of the one you pictured and much larger, however. I think plantings that actually DO require watering every 2-3 days probably represent the best opportunity for plants to realize as much of their genetic potential as possible, but you'll need to decide weather or not you're willing to work toward getting to that point and subsequently making the effort it takes to water that frequently. Since we might never know what caused the leaf drop, it's probably best to confront the issue on several cultural fronts. My plan for the plant in the short term would be to take steps to significantly reduce the volume of excess water your planting can hold. That can be done in a variety/combination of ways. I'd see what I could do about getting it more light and maintaining a constant temp of about 70* or warmer. I'd flush the soil at regular intervals and fertilize regularly. Unless there are other potential limiting factors we don't know about, these suggestions should allow your plant to recover. Because the above doesn't go into a lot of detail doesn't mean I can't. They have some nice things Having said that-I'm not going to buy from them, I stopped looking at these long time ago, and the last idiotic interface change made me mad enough to delete the whatever ideas/images of their products I had, just because. As for money initiative-nothing new here..many sites do that. Even on Quora which is ask-answer community, no material goods provided, just opinions and information, I was very surprized at the sheer amount of idiotic questions, until I got a " special private invitation" from the website-I post questions ( need to compy with rules such and such), after certain amount of good questions (the ones that generate more responses) they promise me starting making money. Start with 5-10 bucks per month.. then I guess if one becomes masterful at posing questions s/he gets more money. So the amount of idiotic questions got at least partially explained..

Well, to keep the "game" going, here are a couple more shots. As you can see more easily from these, the bush on the southside of the arbor got a good bit of freeze damage from a late freeze here and had to be cut back quite a bit.

And, to answer Eric's good observation, the path curves on the right side, but some wooly thyme is going gangbusters at the opeing and doesn't leave a lot of pathway at the opening.

I tend to agree with Macbirch, the fourth one above isn't the best. I think all the greenery on the left side kind of takes away focus from the arbor.

It is funny how the photographer and the angle can play up the attractiveness of the scene, or take away from the niceness. Both these last angles accentuate the imbalance of the left bush and, while the colors up front are nice, don't make for a great result.

I think it is beautiful from all angles. I would love to have a rosebush like yours.

1. My favorite. The Jupiter's Beard compliments the Roses. And there is just enough yellow in the pansies for a little contrast. Very Lovely!

2. Too busy - my eye doesn't know where it wants to focus.

3 & 4. The open door of the garage is distracting.

Ha, the open garrage door. Obviously, I'd never make it staging the pix with every detail in mind like the real photogs! And, now that you mention it, is a bit distracting.

Oh, I didn't even notice how uneven the arbor is in the earlier pictures. It didn't look perfectly evenly pruned but it didn't look like there was anything wrong with it either. Just a lovely natural rambling cascading style. The first of the new pictures really emphasises it. The second one has enough going on in the foreground and trees in the background that it isn't quite so starkly visible. Yes, it sure is a beautiful garden.

I vote for numbers 1 and 2. Beautiful garden!!

I think I'd be tempted to plop an angelic-looking child on the bench. :-)

Thanks Konrad. Its too bad you can't drop by your equipment and photography skill and get some really good ones!

And, Susan, funny you should mention that. We were out working in the yard yesterday and a lady we didn't know pulled up, ushered a super cute little boy and little girl out of her SUV and asked if she could take her grandchildrens' pictures at the arbor.

Of course, we were happy for them to do that. But, I suspect the plan was to get the pics one way or another since both of them were dressed in "picture taking clothes" when they got here.

I like all the pictures- I was so busy looking at the flowers I didn't notice the open door. Those roses are gorgeous.
