Variegation seems to disappear over summer and not return until there is new growth in the spring where I live. Mt Pleasant Iris: Both Iris ensata variegata, and Iris psuedacorus variegata are very stable in keeping their plant habits. I have and still grow both of them for 25-30 years. Iris ensata variegata was officially reg. and named as 'Silverband' by the Ensata Gardens. It has narrow one inch foliage that is green streaked with a silver white. The bloom is a smaller two to three inch fall, of plum red-violet. The season of bloom is within the early to mid I. ensata season about two to three weeks after peak TB. Iris pseudacorus variegata has foliage that is three to four inches wide, cream yellow and green in the spring, however turning all green by summer's end. The small two to three inch blooms are a bright sunshine yellow. Its bloom season is with the TBs. Need to add in RE: Iris pseudacorus variegata- every bloom will set seed pods and any person growing it needs to be very diligent in dead-heading. Do not plant this near a natural waterway, as the next person in charge of your garden may not be as responsible as you are. Iris pseudacorus variegated or not is listed now as a noxious weed in many states.

You might be able to grow some of the very early spring iris like I reticulata or I danfordiae. You’d need to look into the technique of forcing bulbs. It isn't just a matter of planting them in ordinary indoor conditions. Essentially, your gardening life will be really restricted if you won’t go outside. I think that you need to work on the bee thing because it’s going to really affect your ability to enjoy your new interest. I’m assuming you go outdoors sometimes? Gardening isn’t going to provoke bees any more than simply walking through a park. In many decades of gardening and plant watching I’ve never been stung by a bee.

I’m making a new full sun bed. Most of my yard is in shade, but there is ONE strip along the neighbor’s fence that gets full sun. My husband wants to hide the fence and the neighbor’s weedy yard, so here we go! I have some irises that have not bloomed in years. Not enough sun! Also some new ones I was given, old style white ones, that I planted last September, in the only spot I could find at the time, less than full sun. It will be cool all this week. Is it okay to move them now? I know they are supposed to be divided in August, but I’m not planning to divide them, just move them. I’m not much of an iris grower, due to my conditions. But if it’s better to wait til the leaves die down (I've never really noticed when that is), I’ll do that. Thanks!
