I live in a snail and slug mecca, until 20 years ago we didn't see snails just slugs but things have changed. One evening a couple of years ago I picked 40 snails off the trunk of my pink dogwood, I don't know how many more there were I couldn't reach them. The same year any window we looked out in the evening you'd see them slithering across the window panes. It looked like a massive escape from a escargot farm. I think Floral can relate to this. I use copper tape on pots and have bought several rolls of copper mesh, the later I even covered one of the benches in the greenhouse with it. I've seen slimy trails over this at times the little %#$^% must have put rubber boots on. I have no problem with hand picking, it's pick and stomp when I see them, why waste the salt. Annette

mike from maine...sorry but its a gross daymare feeling for me to think this might be considered a "pet". So does this picture mean that the snails are visiting domesticly in Maine currently ? If you have these for eating remember to cook it well as disease can transfer... never did snails....I once ordered a plate of perwinkles, but I just coulnt bring myself to take that first bite. I can eat clams though.LOL Thanks for the post...hopefuly its not from here in Maine. I just cant get rid of the visualization of a huge snail slime trail on the table top in the picture. It takes a while to get that slime off with just regular snails slime.

It's my understanding that Nancy Garrison is a selection that is much more cold tolerant than other edulis varietals. Perhaps that trait is contributing to its ability to thrive without much sun? I've found my passis do best when exposed to as much sun as possible. With regard to snails/slugs, I've never had any problems once my plants get beyond seedling state. This could change, but caterpillars have always been a larger issue for me.
