If you know a lot of peaches you probably don't learn so much new things by reading of peach book.

Quelle surprise: to see this old post back up on page one! It is also a bit serendipitous to see it on this particular day. My DW and I are putting the old house up for sale, sign goes up today. She is 112 years old and we have spent the past 13 years renovating and loving her. But when we moved to the East all those years ago, the plan was always to move back west to our home Province of British Columbia. That is where all of both are families are, so the time has come to go home. It is a bitter sweat time in our lives. Leaving our grand old home, my zone pushing garden and dear friends we have made here in Ontario. I am also very maudlin about all the roses I grow which will most likely perish without my fanatic care and winter protection. But that is life. I will not miss having to go to all the work of winter protection and spring cleanup growing tender roses here requires. I look forward to growing roses in a warmer climate again, but his well be the third garden I will have to build from scratch. Thanks for bringing the post up again jjpeace. Another Canadian here! We spent Aug and Sept of last year operating the campground in Stone Mountain Provincial Park in British Columbia and will be doing it again this year. We are full time, semi-retired campers with a 5th wheel. The Alaska Highway is the place to travel! Lots of provincial parks and campgrounds or wilderness camping beside water if you prefer that (we do.) Muncho Lake and Liard Hot Springs are great places to visit in the summer for wildlife, hiking, fishing, etc. and sitting in the hot springs! The mountains and landscapes are breathtaking along the Alaska Hwy in the north BC and Yukon! We were camping in all of Aug and Sept last summer and had no bugs in Stone Mountain Prov Park but it was cool at night - afternoons warm enough for hiking in shorts and cold enough at night for a quilt and blankets. We loved hiking the trails through the tundra and visiting the Flower Lakes. Great places for tenting near water all along the way. The wildlife in the northern Rockies is amazing! We saw a lot of moose, caribou and wild stone sheep, as well as some elk. There are also occasional wolves and bears but so far we have not run into any, thank goodness! Lots of camping between Fort Nelson, BC and Watson Lake, YK but no stores and no cell phone coverage or internet. It is 600k of true breathtaking wilderness!

Same vacation, doing some planning -- we will be in lots of national parks and want to bring picnic lunches in with us, rather than eating in the cafeterias and lunchrooms. So I'm trying to think of ideas of things we could purchase in local grocery stores that would make an awesome roadside lunch. Sandwiches, of course -- grocery stores here sell "subway" type sandwiches and those on bread, all kinds. (Is this common in more rural areas?) Chips (hubby) Fruit Crackers, cheese, deli meats to make our own "lunchables" Baby carrots Pre-made salads like chicken or Caesar salad Hard-boiled eggs (our grocery stores here have them, is this universal?) Does anyone have ideas that I'm overlooking? Most national parks that we're visiting don't have fire pits or grates in the picnic areas, I've noticed, so things like hamburgers or hot dogs would not be something we could easily cook while picnicking. I am still open to suggestions for restaurants -- we are trying to vary our food stops between restaurants, cooking in the motel rooms, dinner with family, and picnic lunches. Breakfasts will probably be a combination of motel continental breakfast, stopping at a roadside restaurant, or similar. (Thanks for the link to Dobbins House! That looks like a likely place!) Donna
