alan8 some will split and so will not be large enough to bloom the next year. If you want to replant the splits you can grow them another year and maybe they will be large enough to save for the next year. For the price of the tulips it is not worth the effort. This year I paid $12 for each bag of 60 tulips all of which will bloom, most will be from 24 to 30 inches high. I only replant tulips with a circumference of 12 CM or more. Most of the purchased tulips are 14 CM, but I have found that 12CM will bloom reliably. If you are using your regular refrigerator be aware that fresh fruit stored in the same refrigerator gives off Etheline gas which is likely to cause the tulips when planted to not bloom. Al

I'm curious why you just take them to the edge of the field and dump them? If they grow there, seeds will make their way back into your gardens. Anything I want to assure doesn't find its way home goes to the landfill or is burned. The field is close, and it is absolutely green with the sob each spring, along with the wild onions. There are very few that bloom, as the bulbs have divided so many times, they are most all very small non blooming sized ones. If I would take these to the landfill, it would be part of a truckload each week, for months, and I would have to pay to dump them, and it is on the other side of the county. I also dump some in a gully on the property. I dig a good bit of soil out with each clump too, to assure getting all of the nasty little boogers. The beds that I have cleared, and a bed where I removed all the soil to 6" has stayed sob free, so seeds aren't coming in, or at least not much. There are areas of the yard that won't grow grass because about 50% of the topsoil 6" deep are clumps of bulbs. I'll get pics next spring. Surprisingly, there are only a few clumps in the front yard woods. When the house was built, the lot was pretty well wooded. When the basement was dug, the builder ran into slate, so the house ended up farther out of the ground than it would have otherwise. As a result, the builder hauled in 65 dump truck loads of soil from the field...all of it infested with the sob. I thought of asking the manager but I imagined he/she would be clueless and wonder why I expected them for less. I would have just offered him/her $1 a bag, and told them that was what they were reduced to elsewhere since it was so late in the planting season. I'm not shy. I had the driveway blacktopped late one fall. Since it was so late (I was told) they did not put down any weed killer. The next spring the sob pushed up through the blacktop. The paving supervisor said he had never seen or heard of anything like it before. Sue

Update on planting the bulbs in the window box: Just got back from the nursery where I loaded two bags of potting mix into the trunk of my car. After I looked around a bit at the shrubs/trees on sale, I was paying for the potting soil when the owner, who was eating lunch nearby behind the counter, heard the clerk and I discussing the planting of bulbs in the window box. He asked me what kind? He said, "You can't do that. The bulbs will freeze". Because of the lack of insulation in the window box he says, in the ground they freeze but not all the way because they are surrounded by soil. Also mentioned that I could plant the bulbs in indiv. flower pots, place the pots in the ground, then in Spring place the pots in the window box. Not the effect I was after. So, the clerk gave me my money back and we unloaded the bags from my trunk. I'm disappointed, but also glad that the owner was honest and advised me it wouldn't be a good idea.

Thanks Glenda very pretty. It must be spring or close enough to get excited about it. I should take notes now about where to plant bulbs next fall. Crocus in a flower bed get dug up but I have some on the side of my untended long drive way in the gravel in poor soil that make my walk to the mail box pleasant. I have some bulbs blooming under other plants, but some shade is too much and they don't do well. I have established that spring bulbs can be planted under crepe myrtle because they get their leaves late. I have a bed taken over by four o clocks ( wonder if the cold got the roots this year) I think maybe bulbs can be planted there because it takes a while for the four o clocks to get big. There are a few hyacinths there and I'll have to see this year if they are doing well or declining. In late summer that bed is all big tall four o clocks.
