hand held night shot

Took this last night with my T4i. it has this setting on the mode dial. It takes several shots in a row, then puts them together for the best exposure. Pretty cool. But, evidently it needs something fairly close, and some light to focus on. I tried taking a picture of the purple night sky and the lights of the city, but it wouldn't take it.

Nice shot. Can you adjust the exposure time in that mode?

good question...I'll try it tonight

ok...it combines 4 shots to create a stable image. You can change the ambiance settings, couldn't find anywhere to change the exposure.

Can you set the camera to choose an area to focus on and do light settings, such as the center of the frame?

I CAN choose an area to focus on. I'm not sure what you mean by "light settings"...I'm fairly new to camera lingo.
