Bike ride in the desert

Nothing spectacular, straight out the camera during a bike ride. Some co-workers and I have decided to enter some races later this year. We have been doing this 17 mile trail twice a week.

Yesterday, we had a late start then one of riders folded his front wheel like taco. We lost all sunlight and it was a little intimidating through all of the cacti. One decided to reach out and touch me. I had needles from buttock to ankle. The terrain looks flat in these pictures but that just happens to be this part of the trail.

Phyl - I'm almost 40 and have begun having problems with my knees too. No injury, but a lot of pain when I bend. I saw an orthopedist a few weeks ago who confirmed there is no arthritis, but I'm now seeing a physical therapist. They say my problem is that I need to strengthen my quad muscles so they've given me lots of exercises. Here a few that they've given me. You should ask your doctor if these might work for you. 1. Sit with your back against a wall or flat surface. Legs extended out in front of you. Contract your quad muscles, pressing the backs of your knees down into the floor. Hold each contraction for 5 seconds. Do 2 sets of 15. 2. In the same sitting position, bend your knees so that your feet are flat on the floor. Place a rolled up towel or pillow between your knees. Squeeze the towel and hold for 5 seconds. Again, do 2 sets of 15. 3. Lie flat on your back and do 30 leg lifts with your toes flexed (not pointed). Do each leg separately Don't hold the lift. Just make sure it's a slow, controlled lift that engages your quads. There are some others that they've given me, but they are more difficult to explain, but you can find many on-line. Look for ones that focus on building your quad muscles since those are the muscles that hold your kneecap in place as you bend, and will take pressure off of your knees and reduce your pain. awm : thank you for the sweet and supportive wishes. I sure hope your ride goes well. Two of the folks I am with have done that ride and loved it. We are indeed fortunate in the support we get from our families. tina thank you too. I will keep up the updates as it helps to clarify things in my head too :). I am glad you are enjoying it. golddust. we had flashing lights but it was just a miserable set of circumstances....hopefully not to be repeated. Glad you like my TALL tales. Sue yes it never has stormed today but we have had a fine time. We walked several miles to go to a Dollar Store and to stretch our legs. Time for a nap I think. Your trip sounds wonderful. I bet you will always cherish that time as will I this trip. Most likely won't do another as I don't want to leave DH this long again but this one time it is good. More later. c

Judy, we had rain a couple of times. One time we out ran it, on our way to the new overnight town, and got the tent set up just prior to a downpour with hail. Next time we found an open barn/equipment shed and took shelter during heavy rain, again with hail. Overall, it was a BLAST! :) Just like always. The route was similar to 2004, when I rode cross the US instead. No, I don't have to do it all tonight, but it's stuff just waiting for me. LOL and... got a mail, tomorrow is open house in Tulsa. Guess we will head over there, and mow, and make sure all looks good, since daughter number one moved back out. Oh, regular live.... :) Moni

I had my mind on other things, like finding my way out if the desert at night.

This area is also open range for cattle. The are wild and not scared to charge you, either. I tried to take a picture of one but started yelling at me as soon as I stopped the bike, then he started to trot over to us. We booked it!

Very nice! Looks like a great place to bike ride, in the daytime of course. There are many different kinds of cactus, but I think most of them bloom in late Summer.

I see the saguaro has a woodpecker hole in it.

Great photos and looking forward to seeing some more!

My wife chalks this up as boys being boys. This actually isn't my crash, but we were playing "double dog dare" on some steep drops, so I had a lot of influence on it happening. Amazingly, all that Paul recieved was a black eye. Erin does wish I would find hobbies that were less dangerous.

I saw a clown ride a bike like that in a rodeo once:)

Good thing you make Paul wear a helmet. How's the weather over there?

Konrad- I will do my best to leave some cacti out for you. It has become joke around the riding group about my attraction for them, or their attraction for me.

Kt- I wonder if that clown rides the same trails we do? The helmet; Paul actually forgot to bring his helmet and tried to ride without one. I had an extra and convinced him to wear it. We may do stupid stunts, but I like to be safe when doing it. Safe and stupid!
